Powering Sustainable Future: Joseph Cachia & Son Ltd. Collaborates on Malta-Sicily IC2 Interconnected

Joseph Cachia & Son Ltd. (JCS), a subsidiary of the M. Demajo Group, is proud to once again join forces with Nexans on a landmark national project – the €185 million Malta-Sicily Second Interconnector (IC2).

Awarded by Interconnect Malta and co-financed by the European Union, this strategic project involves the installation of a 225MW, 220kV high-voltage subsea cable stretching 99km beneath the Mediterranean Sea, linking Magħtab in Malta to Ragusa in Sicily. The IC2 interconnector will connect Malta to the European electricity grid, reinforcing the national energy infrastructure and playing a vital role in the country’s sustainable future.

Once complete, the project will:

  • Strengthen Malta’s energy grid and stability,

  • Enable greater integration of renewable energy sources,

  • Support national 2030 climate and energy targets,

  • Advance Malta’s long-term decarbonisation goals leading up to 2050.

JCS played a central role in the bid preparation process, contributing decades of local knowledge and engineering expertise. This project continues a 16-year collaboration between JCS and Nexans, which also successfully delivered the country’s first interconnector.

“We are also honoured to have been supported by our local ally, M. Demajo Group, whose expertise has been invaluable during these 16 years of collaboration. Together, with Interconnect Malta and all involved parties, we are creating a more secure, more resilient, and more sustainable energy grid.”
– Yvan Duperray, VP Sales PWR-Transmission, Nexans

The IC2 project represents a major step forward in ensuring long-term energy resilience and environmental progress for Malta and the region. The M. Demajo Group is proud to support this milestone initiative and contribute to powering a more sustainable future.
